Isotretinoin is an oral retinoid derived from vitamin A, isotretinoin is very effective in controlling and treating acne and induces long-term remission in people with acne. But you should know that isotretinoin is not suitable for all types of acne. Isotretinoin was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of acne vulgaris in 1982, and it was also approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for the same purpose in 1983.

Isotretinoin is a very lipophilic medicine, so the bioavailability of this drug increases with foods. This medicine is excreted through urine and feces. The mechanism of isotretinoin is such that it reduces sebum production, reduces the size of sebaceous glands, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-keratinizing effects on the skin.

The recommended therapeutic dose of this drug based on guidelines and references is between 0.5-1.0 mg/kg/ day. A standard course of isotretinoin therapy is 16 to 20 weeks, this dose is different based on the doctor’s diagnosis for each person.

The indicated use of isotretinoin is for cases who severe, recalcitrant cystic acne Severe, recalcitrant nodular and inflammatory acne, Moderate acne unresponsive to conventional therapy, and Patients who scar.

Isotretinoin is a potent teratogen, pregnancy must be avoided during treatment. Female patients should be assured that they may safely conceive but should wait at least 1 month after isotretinoin is discontinued.
